Our friend Doris arrived from London on Friday last weekend. Having never been up the world’s once tallest building, Taipei 101, so we though it would make a good Saturday morning outing.
However, riding the worlds fastest elevator up to the top costs a staggering 500NT (£10/$17/€12.5) which while not astronomical, when two of the three members of the group have already been up before, it seems a waste of £30 to look across the city from above
Fear not, here is a secret hack for when you visit Taipei.
Walk out of the main building and into the adjoining building which looks like giant grey spartan lobby. Ask the guard where you queue up for Starbucks and you will be given access to the 34th floor for free (other than the price of a skinny frappuccino).
Be sure to bring your passport/ ID to cover the group of people. One is fine for the group.
The view from this Starbucks is pretty much as good as from the top and you get to enjoy a coffee at the same time.
If you’re not too interested in going to the top of something, and want to save some money, try this hack next time you go.
The views from both the top and Starbucks are somewhat spoilt by the green UV film they put on the windows which makes even nice days look like the end of the world and pictures don’t come out very well.
